The Incredible Fleming Hardy Hibiscus

Everybody knows the tropical kinds, but very few know that there are several native wildflower hibiscus in North America, many hardy almost to Canada. These native species were painstakingly hybridized over the years by a famous trio of brothers named Fleming in Omaha, NE. Today, their work offers you spectacular plants that are perfect for wildflower meadows. We have made an arrangement with a nursery in NE that handles them, so we can offer you over a dozen of the Fleming hybrids. These incredible plants feature flowers in several colors that are up to 10" across, and bloom on bushes only 2 to 4 ft. tall. These are tough, dependable perennial shrubs, and highly recommended. Best of all, they're all on sale this week. Find them under "Native Plants and near hybrids" at AmericanMeadows.com.

The Desert Bursts into Bloom!

After all the flooding rains in the Southwest, homes may be sliding off hillsides, streets in LA may be awash, but one thing is wonderful: the bloom of the desert wildflowers in California's southern mountains. Near the Mexico border, Anza-Borrego State Park is famous for its desert flowers in "good years", and as you can see, this is a very good year. This photo was sent to us from our favorite roving photographer, Don Paulson, who is there taking in the big show right now.
