Recent rains signal big bloom in the Southwest
The Wildflower Wave rolls on: While most of the continent still shivers with winter, the deserts in Southern California, Death Valley, and across the entire Southwest are seeing the signals of a major wildflower bloom. It doesn't happen every year; it all depends on the rains at this time. There is already some color, but very recent rains are getting photographers and naturalists excited about the big bloom they see coming during the next two months.

When exactly is Earth Day?
I've been looking into this, and I thought everyone agreed that it's April 22, right? Well many do, but others celebrate the same day, Earth Day, on March 20. In either case, this year will be the 34th Earth Day, an environmental celebration that began in 1970. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin claims to be the founder, and his date is April 22. But John McConnell, an activist editor, is the proponent of March 20, and he claims to be the day's founder. Mr. McConnell chose March 20 since it is also the first day of spring, and World Peace Day at the UN. The UN has sanctioned his date, so it's sometimes called UN or World Earth Day. Probably because April 22 is later into spring, most groups I know celebrate on April 22, but you have your choice.
